Natalia Grace Barnett case subject of 'Good American Family':
Ellen Pompeo, the star of Grey’s Anatomy, is leading a new Hulu series called Good American Family, which premieres on March 19. The show is inspired by real-life cases, including the strange and controversial story of Natalia Grace Barnett.
Natalia was a Ukrainian orphan adopted in 2010 by Kristine and Michael Barnett, a couple from Indiana. When they adopted her, they believed she was around 6 or 7 years old. She had a rare genetic condition called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, which affects bone growth and causes short stature.
Not long after bringing her home, the Barnetts began to believe Natalia was actually much older than her birth certificate stated. They claimed she had physical signs of puberty, including pubic hair and a menstrual cycle, and also showed signs of mental illness. The couple accused Natalia of lying about her age and even said she was dangerous.
The case gained national attention because of the bizarre accusations and legal battles that followed. The Barnetts had Natalia’s age legally changed to make her an adult, then moved out of the country—leaving her alone in a rented apartment. Their story became one of the most shocking and debated cases in true crime history.
Where is Natalia Grace now?
Natalia is either roughly 21 or 34, depending on which records you reference. Natalia reflected on her escape from her second set of adoptive parents, her new adoptive family, forgiveness and her aspirations for the future in an exclusive interview with People Magazine last month.
